The aim of instruction at the vocational upper secondary school is to obtain the general university entrance qualification (Abitur) as well as to develop a vocational focus for entry into a profession. The general university entrance qualification is obtained by demonstrating specific achievements in the 12th and 13th grades and by passing the Abitur examination. It entitles students to study at both universities and universities of applied sciences in all German states. The academic component of the university of applied sciences entrance qualification can be obtained by demonstrating specific achievements in two consecutive semesters of the qualification phase.
