Richard Powers, Learning Designer and Digital Education Expert at the University of Stuttgart opened the session sharing what every teacher needs to know before teaching online. Key insights included hands-on training, a coaching mindset and learning design. Mr. Powers also highlighted some soft skills that teachers must have, like time management, student-centred approaches and effective persona, “Anyone can push a few buttons, it takes a real teacher to teach online”, he declared.

He created and shared a methodology based in Five Principles for Transitioning Online:

  1. Respect time management and learning curve it takes starting out
  2. Understand “Online Learning”: Experience it as a learner first!
  3. Find Your Online “Voice” and “Persona” through Your Imagination
  4. Honor typical educator attitudes: Enthusiasts, Neutrals, and Sceptics.
  5. Differentiate between design and delivery competences

The second part of the webinar featured Lieselot Declerq and Annabel Declerq, co-founders of D-Teach Online, the first online school in Belgium. They both shared their customised plans for online teaching and highlighted benefits such as enhanced learning outcomes, increased participation, social equity, enhanced collaboration and reduced stereotyping.

In the webinar session, experts discussed the challenges with the Hub participants and shared what works and what does not work in online teaching based on their experiences. These insights are key for VET centres to teach online and enhance learning effectively.
